"If you want to bring up your family in privacy, silence, in the conditions of nature, gather together two thousand people, take each other by the hand: go through a single door. Your houses will be fifty metres high. There will be parks around the house. And on the rooftops there will be surprising nurseries." (le Corbusier)
This was how Le Corbusier described his Housing Units, a prototype of which was built in Marseille between 1945 and 1952 (then others in Rezé, Berlin, Briey et Firminy-Vert). Each independent unit built on two levels, spanning the width of the building and opening onto a balcony, offered all the conveniences of collective living.
