“Give me charcoal and some paper! The process begins with a response to the site. Thick walls and a crab's shell to give curves to a static plan. (...) There won't be any windows: instead, streams of light will filter in from all sides.” (Le Corbusier)
Le Corbusier built Notre-Dame du Haut Chapel on the Ronchamp hill between 1953 and 1955. Fitted with windows through which to see the surrounding nature instead of stained glass, the building follows the sloping curve of the site down to the altar. A blend of curves and vertical lines, slender or squat according to where it is viewed from, the design defined according to the Modulor system enabled the creation of “the ineffable space, the crowning of plastic emotion”.
