Anticipating not only the debate on the death of the author but also the unmade works of Conceptual Art, in 1960 Isidore Isou theorised a “supertemporal” art, perpetually incomplete and open to the participation of the public. Supertemporal paintings include a space deliberately left blank by the artist, so that the viewer as creator can intervene and modify the work. Easily manipulable materials can serve as well: Roland Sabatier’s Sculpture filiforme supertemporelle offers all-comers the chance to model as they wish the flexible wire of which it is made, a notice fixed alongside the work explicitly inviting them to do so.
