Composition IX
1936
“Here, reason, the conscious, the deliberate, play a preponderant role. Except that I always decide in favour of feeling rather than calculation.” (Kandinsky)
Living in Neuilly-sur-Seine since 1934, Wassily Kandinsky applied himself to large compositions in which he developed the repertory of forms he established at the Bauhaus. lnitially entitled L'Un et l'Autre [One and the Other], this one has a multitude of floating motifs, embryonic forms, a chequerboard and geometrical figures that contrast with the bold assertion of the coloured diagonals. Composition IX is the only painting by Kandinsky to have entered a French museum during his lifetime.
