"Universality is a common goal on the cultural, political and spiritual horizon which will only be achieved when all ethnie groups realise, through real dialogue, that we are one and the same family." (Mancoba)
Ernest Mancoba left South Africa in 1938 to study in Paris. He actively participated in the Cobra and H0st movements in the late 1940s. Peinture 1965 testifies to the multiple influences that inspired his work. lt suggests the silhouette of a Kota effigy, an ancestral relie attached to African baskets, while using rapid gestur es inspired by cave paintings. The colours evoke medieval Danish frescoes, which the artist discovered through the sculptor Sonia Ferlov-Mancoba.
