"lm Grau was the conclusion of my 'dramatic period',that is, the very thick accumulation of so many forms." (Kandinsky)
This was among the final works of Wassily Kandinsky's Russian period, painted a short time before he settled in Germany. The composition had been prepared in several works on paper, including a water colour that belongs to the Museum. On a background in muted tones of grey float organic elements that were soon ta be replaced by more geometric forms. ln the top-left corner, a pattern justifies the initial title chosen by the artist, Painting with the Black Bow.
