"Remarkable contradiction, Germans are horrible by idealism. ln this respect, they still have a great future." (Hausmann)
Sharing the idea of an anarcho-communi st utopia, Raoul Hausmann's satirical drawings conveyed the ideology of an anti-bourgeois and anti-militarist life. He contributed to Die Freie Strasse ( 1915-1918), an anarchist publication and to Club dada in 1918. Following the defeat of Germany in the First World War and the proclamation of the Weimar Republic in 1919, Hausmann continued to criticise the regime through this portrait of Marshal von Hindenburg, who had just publicly minimised the superiority of the Allies at the end of the war.
