Eija-Liisa Ahtila pictures situations of extreme psychological tension or disturbed communication where the distinction between real and imaginary breaks down, describing her works as “human dramas”. The Casting Portraits series features a group of young teenagers auditioning for the Ahtila’s film If 6 was 9 (1995), also included in the exhibition. In these images Eija-Liisa Ahtila captures moments of emotional vulnerability, offering the viewer access to her subjects’ inner lives.
