Eija-Liisa Ahtila makes films she describes as “human dramas”. In If 6 was 9, adolescent girls speak of their emotional and sexual lives. Across the three screens, the narrative – simultaneously continuous and syncopated – plays on discrepancies between image and sound. If fiction here meets documentary and thought the spoken word, the whole arrangement seems to keep emotion at bay. The formal instability highlights the outgoing but inaccessible subjectivity of these teenagers, ambiguously situated in a space between childhood memories and the sexual confessions of the present.
