Table d'appoint Schwarzenberg
1981
As a major player in radical architecture and a precursor of the postmodern movement in architecture, Hollein designed objects whose formal freedom prevailed over their utilitarian aspect.
This table reinterprets the conventions of Art Deco and those of the Biedermeier style of the first half of the 19th century in Austria. The rectangular top evokes a ziggurat form with the effect of an inverted pyramid and an accumulation of lines reminiscent of Hans Hollein's architecture. With his sculptural treatment and sense of irony, he proposes a reinterpretation of the archetypal models of architecture and design, in an approach that foreshadows postmodernism.
