La Femme au compotier

Laurens endows his figure with the modern rhythm of Cubism while still taking into account the peaceful nature of stone.
After studying the statue-columns in the royal doorway of Chartres cathedral, Henri Laurens gave a vertical boost to his female nudes. ln this Cubist composition, he makes the body of the woman spring upright in a juxtaposition of vertical planes, softened by the curves of the breasts or the almond shape of the eyelid. The light varies depending on the slope of the planes, revealing all the finesse of the cutting work.
