Fromanger superimposed a sun, a cloud and a horizon line to create one of his Paysages découpés [Cut-up Landscapes], laying the foundations of an art that was as formal as it was engaged.
Not without humour, the natural elements in this series are drawn together, revealed or hidden, forming a remarkable collection of variations on a single theme. Gérard Fromanger played with the parameters of representation. During the riots of May 68, the strength of colour and code in his work contributed to an evocation of the controversial topics of the time. ln the early 1970s, he became a major figure of the Narrative Figuration movement.
