Begun in 1968, the Hanging series is the most characteristic of her work. Suspended from clothes hangers or from racks she saw passing through her New York neighbourhood, these dehumanised silhouettes crafted from coloured vinyl are made up of cut-outs that hug the contours of bodies stretched out on paper (her own or those of close relations). These flexible and disarticulated forms and this artificial heart are simultaneously terrestrial counterpoints to her works and a critique of mass society.
