Untitled (Green Screen)

Jeff Elrod is one of the new generation of abstract painters, Americans especially, who have turned to digital to create their work. Since 1997, he has produced his images on computer before rendering them by hand or, more rarely, printing them directly on canvas. Working digitally, he says, favours a kind of pictorial automatism the brush still hinders. With its large format and two unmodulated colours Untitled (Green screen) is typical of Elrod’s work. In the hybrid, half-digital, half-analogue space of the painting, geometry and automatic gesture seem to have been curiously reconciled.
