A member of the Supports/Surfaces group, Noël Dolla makes use of simple materials or everyday objects in his work. His Chevrons et rondins leaves no scope for sophistication, appearing as the negation of “fine art” as craft or intellectual exercise. Consisting of a rafter bristling with sections of dowel, the work exhibits an inclination towards the artisanal and a certain respect for the material, Dolla having preserved the rafter’s original position leaning against a wall. The artist is also exploring here the material’s ability to withstand the repeated impress of a certain mark, the point, represented by the drilled holes, the dowel etc.
