Idole
[1950]
"A work that has no roots in myth or poetry, that has none of the depth, the essence of the universe, is no more than a ghost." (Jean Arp)
The title of this sculpture clearly expresses Jean Arp’s admiration for the primordial figures of pre-classical Greek art. With the smooth and polished forms of its frontal silhouette, this great plaster, used to make a bronze cast, presents many points in common with certain Cycladic statuettes. The rounded shape of the belly, marked with a half-sphere, evokes the idea of fertility.
