City-communication interchange as mean of expression
1962
For Hans Hollein, “architecture, sculpture and painting are now one”. Part primitivism, part critique of functionalism, Hollein’s work consistently puts architecture into question. Influenced by Pop Art, and in particular by Claes Oldenburg, he changes the scale of objects in his photomontages, the over-sized object gaining a power to “transform” space. Hollein showed these radical architectural proposals in 1963, as part of “Architektur”, his and Walter Pichler’s programmatic exhibition at Galerie St Stephan in Vienna. He later elaborated ways of transforming spatial perception, such as his “architecture pill” of 1967.
