Philippe Parreno made a name for himself in France in the early 1990s, with work that explored the possibilities of the exhibition as an artistic medium. More interested in situations than in their resolution, he sees his art as a process rather than as the production of an object. Inspired by the advertising signs over the entrances to American movie-houses, the Marquees of different sizes and designs that he has created since 2006 are set above the doorways to rooms, like the ghosts of Broadway past. Their operation can be synchronised with that of other works or elements of exhibition design in a loop structured by the melancholy appearance and disappearance of light.
