A qualified ethnologist, Valérie Jouve uses photography to depict an often poignant urban humanity. Her thinking about frontiers has led her to question the links between the Palestinian territories and their occupants. Rather than overtly political, her anonymous portraits evoke internal worlds, and create a sense of emotion. Halfway between documentary photography and staging, her pictures banish the picturesque in favour of an aesthetic of neutrality. They are the result of a long process (posing the model; processing the image through photomontage), which gives her figures far greater force.
