24 heures de la vie d'une femme ordinaire. Réalités / Fantasmes
1974
Together with Gina Pane, Michel Journiac was one of the major representatives of Body Art in France. In his actions, he pictured himself to address the social inscription of the body, whether as site of suffering or source of desire. For this “photographic action” he dressed in female attire and stereotypically over-acted “a day in the life of an ordinary woman”. The commonplace and routinized activities of housework contrast with the roles played in fantasy and imagination (prostitute, communicant, strip artist, widow…). Here the artist parodies the clichés purveyed by women’s magazines that confirm women in their social subordination.
