Colossal Torso II
1959
The American painter Leon Golub was close to the New Figuration group. His resolutely political work is inseparably tied to the trauma of the Second World War. The monumental format and abraded appearance of his canvases accentuates their tragic character. Golub developed a distinctive painting technique in which multiple layers of dripped lacquer create a shimmer in which the figure seems to dissolve. One of the most lyrical of Golub’s paintings, Colossal Torso II stands on the verge of abstraction, with this at first almost unrecognizable body dominating the whole composition.
