Les vases communicants
vers 1938 - 1939
Designed to announce the conferences given by André Breton at the University of Mexico in 1938, this poster boldly summarizes the surrealist project.
With these Communicating Vessels, Diego Rivera depicts the operation described by the spearhead of surrealism through a monumental gnarled, grimacing head expressing the dual potential of the human mind. The state of wakefulness (open eye) is directly linked to dreams (closed eye) in a duality that is specific to the demand for emancipation made to a truly revolutionary art. This is what André Breton and Léon Trotsky called for in their Manifesta for an lndependent Revolutionary Art, written in Mexico at the same time.
