Gul kvinde ved havet
(Femme jaune au bord de la mer)
1949
Pedersen revived ancient Nordic themes with this mermaid or sailor's wife.
The world of the sea and the animals specific to Viking imagery are presented in his graphical and pictorial works. With its thick texture, the spontaneous gestures of the painter and the close-up views of the characters, this painting resembles an object from a popular tradition, such as a wood engraving, a chiselled bronze or embroidery. Like all the members of the Cobra group, Carl-Henning Pedersen thus ejected all elitism and sought to revive painting.
