Melker II
2004
With this work, Lavier exercises a humorous questioning of the links between painting and sculpture, figuration and abstraction and life and art.
Since more than forty years, Bertrand Lavier has shaken up our visual perceptions through various methods which he developed in open series. One of his 'demonstrations' , begun in 1980, consists in applying a thick layer of paint, 'Van Gogh-style', to everyday objects while respecting their original colours. Here, he has partially covered a piece of upholstery fabric (from the Melker range made by Sandberg), leaving the object, the fabric, and a detail of his 'representation on the motif' to coexist.
