Mekness II
2005 - 2021
ln 2003, Lavier began a new "project", in which he devoted himself to one of his favourite exercises: appropriation/transposition.
Here, Bertrand Lavier takes one of the famous stripe paintings made by American artist Frank Stella in the first half of the 1960s, and transposes it into coloured neon lights. Stella's works engendered a troubling visual impact that is reinforced in this luminous version. This confusion is accompanied by a blend of signatures: Lavier used neon lighting, which was the preferred medium of minimalist artist Dan Flavin and with which the latter made a name for himself at the same time as Stella was developing his painted stripes.
