The photography of Yto Barrada is closely linked to the town of Tangiers where the artist currently lives. From the end of the 1990s the artist in his series Le Détroit often uses metaphores to address some of the key issues, such as migration and urbanization, in the town. These two images belong to a series produced in 2011 around an education centre or “farm” located in a neighbourhood of Tangiers. This NGO aims to raise the awareness of the region’s school children on their environment through individual self-development and citizen empowerment. The images produced by Yto Barrada create a garden of Eden maintained and protected by its gardener and caretaker: Ba-Youssef.
