Yto Barrada’s photographic work is intimately related to Tangier, the city she has made her home alongside Paris. Beginning in the late 1990s, in her series Le Détroit Barrada has tackled, often in metaphorical manner, some of the major issues facing the city. In it she provides a kind of reportage on the Moroccan side of the Straits of Gibraltar, on the hopes and tragedies of migration across them.
