Not Wanting To Say Anything About Marcel
septembre 1969
ln "not wanting to say anything about Marcel", Cage paid an eloquent tribute to the artist Marcel Duchamp who died the previous year.
These tinted transparent panes, strewn with signs and fragments of words, were designed based on chance in echo of Marcel Duchamp's masterpiece The Large Glass ( 1915-1923, Philadelphia Museum of Art, USA). Following their encounter in 1941, the French artist represented a tutor-like figure for John Cage. Both artists aimed to position every statement on the tight-rope of a paradox or bring together two distinct worlds to create a shortcut which, initially appearing grotesque and absurd, is in fact all the more striking.
