River, Rocks and Smoke
10 avril 1990
Made in the heart of the countryside in Virginia, River, Rocks and Smoke testifies to the environmental awareness of this artist, poet and composer of experimental music.
Inspired by Zen Buddhism, John Cage explored the role of randomness and promoted the fusion of art and real life, as well as the raie of "non-choice" in the creator's input. After being soaked in river water, the paper was coloured by smoke from a plant fire for a duration determined by the Yi King, a Chinese divinatory book. To counterbalance this vaporous material, Cage drew the outlines of rocks placed on the paper. Like in his music, he placed randomness, emptiness and silence at the heart of his compositions.
