Cratère
1960
At a time when art in Paris was dominated by Abstraction, Christo offered very personal responses through a series of matterist works called Cratères [Craters].
Christo arrived in Paris at the age of 23 having fled from communist Bulgaria.
Claiming a connection with Jean Dubuffet, he began making paintings
the following year in which the matter, containing sand and glue, stained with enamel and even incorporating small cylindrical metal tubes, possesses the evocative strength of lunar craters. The use of colour reinforces the suggested geological aspect, the idea of a primordial state of the matter.
