La Marche des machines
1929
The Ukrainian-born artist Eugène Deslaw emigrated to Czechoslovakia, and then in 1928 to Paris. He carried out experimental work in films during the Twenties. La Marche des machines, created in collaboration with Boris Kaufman (brother of Dziga Vertov) and Fred Zinnemann, explores the various movements of machines in a rhythmic succession of images – a soldering iron, cranes, electric saws and so on – seen in close-up, counterpoint and superimposition. Its subject was also celebrated by Moholy-Nagy and Léger.
