This ensemble addresses the censorship applied in Japan on illustrated publications and the legal ambiguities surrounding the notion of obscenity.
Éric Baudelaire explores the bokashi, a Japanese form of censorship which consists in scratching all images "which unnecessarily excite or stimulate sexual desire". These heliogravure prints are enlargements of the scratching on western art magazines. In the video, a bookshop employee receives art books; she scratches certain images, firstly of nudity, then of landscapes and abstract works. Her gesture of self-censorship can be seen as a form of poetry of the absurd, a ritual which transforms into a reflection on the power of images.
