This photograph by Josephine Pryde juxtaposes different types of image and with them contradictory artistic movements: the commercial photography exploited by Pop Art, the dripped paint evocative of Abstract Expressionism, and Surrealist collage. The work vacillates between photography and painting, desacralisation and the forceful establishment of a new regime of representation. The work’s status remains as ambiguous as its title, reminiscent of both advertising and Minimalism, a critical reworking of Jasper Johns’ grey paintings, themselves as conceptual as they were Pop.
