When forced by the war to retire to Tuscany, Magnelli abandoned figuration temporarily, deriving his inspiration from the sculptures in his collection.
Alberto Magnelli purchased his first African mask as early as 1913, and in 1914 he brought sculptures by Alexander Archipenko back from Paris. He was inspired here by their rigorous cuts, geometrical and tapering forms. The abandonment of black contours and the use of obliques added a dynamic to these abstract compositions, which were contemporaneous with the radical research of Wassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich or Frantisek Kupka.
