Inferno Hallelujah
16 juillet 1964 - 12 août 1964
The sequence of vigorously traced circles suggests an astral universe, a fascinating theme in the 1960s.
ln the immediate post-war period, Ernst Wilhelm Nay abandoned figuration in favour of repeating circular motifs that generate powerful visual rhythms inspired by contemporary music. As an heir to Kandinsky and Kupka, Inferno Hallelujah particularly testifies to this telluric, cosmic and spiritual dimension. Pierced with pupils, these circles also form a multitude of eyes, a central motif in Nay's work at the time, which transform the work into an ocular machine that looks at the same time as it is looked at.
