L'Imitation du cinéma

We find a variety of innovations in the film L'Imitation du cinéma [The Imitation of Cinema], alongside crosses sold by weight, and small silver crosses that end up in the begging bowl of a blind man" (Mariën)
Poet and artist Marcel Mariën joined the Surrealist group in Belgium in 1937. 1 n 1960 he projected his first fiction film in 16 mm, L 'Imitation du cinéma in the Palais des Beaux-arts (Palace of Fine Arts) in Brussels. This blasphemous and absurd, initiatory film caused immediate outrage as it followed the course of a young man who turns away from his licentious literature after reading The Imitation of Christ. Thereafter, his desire to imitate drove him to want to be crucified. The film was censored, being projected clandestinely in France.
