In 2007, Merlin Carpenter invited the public to the opening of his exhibition, entitled “The Opening”. On his arrival, the gallery contained only flowers, while a pianist played in the background, recalling Andy Warhol’s opening at Philadelphia’s Institute of Contemporary Art in 1965. It was only in the course of the evening that Carpenter began to paint on a series of white canvasses, dipping a broad brush in a bucket of black paint. Alongside the sometimes provocative messages such as “I HATE YOU THE ART WORLD YOU CUNTS” there was this “I LIKE CHRIS WOOL”, a tribute to the abstract painter who inspired Carpenter’s practice in its variation of process and medium.
