Alice en bataille fleurie
1941 - 1951
Committed to a psychiatric hospital as early as 1918, Corbaz, an emblematic figure of Art Brut, reveals a ghostly theatrical world marked by youthful memories of Potsdam Palace.
This majestic sewn assemblage articulates various formats of carefully smoothed kraft paper with magazine pages. Sumptuous colouring, obtained with pencils, petal juice and toothpaste, unfolds in the vertical succession of figures on front and back. Initially distracted, the dazzled eye apprehends this scenic device with an impression of simultaneity. Here the artist’s gestures come to life as she spreads her pigments with feverish circular movements of her fingertips.
