Le Songe
[1930]
Savinio's painting is tinged with harsh irony, where myth and family narrative clash, bringing him closer to his brother, painter Giorgio De Chirico.
Does Le Songe really represent the chaste Susanna of the Bible story being observed by the eiders? This voluptuous figure among anthropomorphic animals comes from an antique sculpture that Alberto Savinio was to come back to several times, reusing the characteristics of his sources almost mechanically. The transposition of myths and their metamorphosis lies at the heart of his pictorial work. The painting belonged to poet Paul Éluard, then to Surrealist publisher, Henri Parisot.
