"ln making lesNatura, I was thinking of those worlds, of the moon with these... holes, this terrible silence that causes anguish, and the astronauts in a new world." (Fontana)
Lucio Fontana returned to ceramics and sculpture in 1959. ln Albisola, a centre of ltalian ceramics, he designed some thirty spheres, each one titled Natura, which is also an italian slang word for the female sexual organ. Pierced or cleft, the powerfully sculpted spheres still bear the marks of the artist1s hands and appear as forms that evade categorisation: too elaborate to be entirely natural, and yet too unfinished to be quite civilised.
