L'Homme qui marche
[1945]
With L'Homme qui marche [Walking man], made during her exile in Switzerland, Richier boldly took on a theme that earned Auguste Rodin his earliest fame.
Far from possessing any stately demeanour, the figure appears unsteady, his eyes bulging and his skull pierced by light. The expressively worked bronze, considered to be inseparably connected with the dangers hanging over mankind after the war, is also a way of bringing it to life: "My statues, I hollowed and tore them to give them a changing and living appearance." The artist developed this image of a humanity as wounded as it is threatening two years later in L 'Orage [Storm Man].
