"I have tried to get the fluidity and surprise of image connection, the simultaneity of film montage, into painting." (Salle)
A major figure of Post-Modernism, David Salle has developed, since the 1980s, a style of painting that is boldly heterogeneous in its themes, motifs and techniques used. Here, he juxtaposes black and white cartoons from the 1950s with brightly coloured objects from advertisements. The layering reflects the ongoing collision between thoughts, emotions and images. The work expresses the feeling that painting, to preserve its historical greatness, can be nothing but ironic with regards to itself.
