Devotional Wallpaper
2008 - 2017
Boyce's artistic practice is concerned with strategies of collective commemoration to counter forms of historical amnesia.
In 1999, Sonia Boyce initiated a series of workshops with women from Liverpool. During the first session, the Afro-Caribbean artist asked the participants to name their favourite black British singer. This exchange gave rise to the Devotional project, for which she began making Devotional Wallpaper in 2008, a work that features the names of black artists from the British music scene and becomes a space for collective commemoration.
