The event is over
Catarina Miranda, the choreographer and visual artist who was hosted in 2022 for the France-Portugal (Fluorescent Futurologies) season, returns to the Centre Pompidou to present Atsumori, her latest creation
For her brand-new creation, the artist travelled to Tokyo, familiarised herself with Noh theatre and came to grips with its conventions and repertoire. Atsumori, the title of this creation, is thus borrowed from a 15th century play written by Zeami Motokiyo (who is still considered today to be one of the most celebrated authors and theorists of Noh). The original plot concerns the redemption of the ghost of a young samurai, killed in combat, wandering aimlessly on the battlefield in the hope of vengeance.
Aided by a monk, the ghost of the deceased warrior finally finds peace by accepting his death. While moving away from the narrative arc of the original play, Catarina Miranda invents a futuristic spectral dance, crossed with the choreographic abstraction of Noh theatre. Decked out in armour and masks, suffused with the memory and rhythms of a fictitious imagination and haunted by the social constructions of the past and future, ghostlike bodies pace the stage like a territory to be occupied. Continuing the ambitious lighting work begun in her earlier shows, Catarina Miranda again stretches space with hypnotic lights. Evoking the ancient ghosts of traditional Noh, the stage becomes a reflective setting conducive to hosting this gripping phantasmal ballet for five performers.
