The Centre Pompidou is participating in the first retrospective in France of filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s shorts, videos and feature films, shown as part of the Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin festival held in Paris from 2 to 8 May 2022.
The retrospective includes 27 films divided into four sessions composed by the artist himself and offering an all-new perspective on his work. This session is the second in the retrospective. The themes addressed in Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s works include dreams and the invisible, rural life in Thailand in the face of modernity, plus nature and states of consciousness between wakefulness and sleep, to name but a few. Often non-linear, frequently using unconventional narrative structures and disassociation, his works intertwine real and imaginary spaces or ghosts and the living, while subtly addressing social and political questions.
Screening followed by a conversation with Apichatpong Weerasethakul. The conversation will be held remotely and transmitted live (to be confirmed).

With a blank screen that unfurls to the accompaniment of a rich soundscape, Trailer for CinDi allows for a multiplicity of possible projections. Ashes evokes a dream of returning to one's native village against the backdrop of a demonstration against a new law. Vampire is a journey through the jungle in search of a bird that feeds on blood. In Haunted Houses, a world filled with spirits unfolds in parallel to daily life: from village to village, the inhabitants of the area around Khon Kaen, Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s native city, relive scenes from a popular Thai TV series word for word.
