Films parfumés 1

In the mid-Seventies, Gianikian and Ricci Lucchi filmed a collection of mummified objects "snatched from the river of time", as Bazin put it. This catalogue of cracked china dolls, porcelains and wax masks was accompanied by the diffusion of scents during screenings, which became image-revealers, just as Condillac dreamed in Le Traité des sensations. Today the scents cannot diffused, but the box of essences is exhibited at the Centre Pompidou. What remains of the set-up is this strange, nostalgic journey through "the dry poetry of the catalogue", to quote Philippe Azoury (Trafic, no. 38, summer 2001).
