The films of Christopher MacLaine (1923-1975) are probably the most accurate expression of the sensibility of the Californian Beat movement at its beginnings. MacLaine, who ended up destitute and largely forgotten, only made four films in San Francisco during the Fifties. Championed by Stan Brakhage, who considered Scotch Hop (1959) his final masterpiece, his name remains associated with his first film, The End (1953), in which he improvises as a prophet of doom.
