The event is over
Rayane Mcirdi, born in 1993, graduated from the Paris School of Fine Art in 2019. He makes films that swing between fiction and documentary that he constructs in close collaboration with friends and family. The Croissant de feu (Crescent of Fire) trilogy, his latest series of films, is an opportunity to plunge into his family history through the sometimes contradictory memories, aspirations and interrogations of representatives of three successive generations.
Rayane's generation is represented by his cousin Samir, who presents a nostalgic account of everyday life in the Mourinoux district in Asnières-sur-Seine, before the destruction of the Gentianes housing block. He deplores the progressive transformation of the neighbourhood caused by the process of gentrification taking place in the majority of Parisian suburbs (Le Croissant de feu, 2021).
What becomes of the historical residents, those who no longer recognize the places where they have sometimes spent their lives, like the artist's mother and some of his aunts who, in the course of a pastoral afternoon, recount their arrival in France, how they discovered and developed an attachment for this neighbourhood in Le Jardin (The Garden)?
In Mina the artist subtly evokes the death of his grandmother, a tutelary figure who came from Algeria, around whom were woven the ordinary and extraordinary stories and tales that make up the everyday life of the family. Through his practice consisting in collecting anecdotes and testimonies, and by making intimate portraits, Rayane Mcirdi provides a mouthpiece for his family and all those who are little listened to.
