New technology transforms a Swiss watchmaking town in the 19th century. Joséphine, a young worker, fits balance springs, which oscillate inside the mechanism of the watch. Finding out about new ways of organising money, time and work, she joins the local movement of anarchist watchmakers, where she meets a Russian traveller, Pierre Kropotkin.
“In Unrest, Cyril Schäublin roams a Swiss village at a time when anarchism was a lively movement – the late 19th century. Drawing on Pierre Kropotkin’s Memoirs of a Revolutionist and working with amateur actors in a stunning setting, he reproduces the activities organised around a watch making factory, symbol of capitalist circularity – by producing watches, the workers actually help their overlords control them. Unrest is like a welcome reminder: while we take refuge at home, the Earth keeps on spinning.” Olivia Cooper-Hadjian, Cahiers du Cinéma, March 2022
