Nelly & Nadine is the unlikely story of two women who fall in love on Christmas Eve 1944, in the Ravensbrück concentration camp. Separated during the last months of the war, Nelly and Nadine survive, find each other again and spend the rest of their lives together. For many years, they kept their love story a secret, even from certain close family members. Now, Nelly’s granddaughter Sylvie has opened up Nelly and Nadine’s personal archives and brought their story to light at last.
On 28 April 1945, some 2,000 prisoners from Nazi concentration camps arrived at Malmö port in Sweden. Magnus Gertten used newsreels documenting the event to produce two initial documentaries, Harbour of Hope (2011) then Every Face Has a Name (2015), before finding out in 2016, about the story behind the figure of Nadine Hwang, to which he kept returning.
“One of the most enigmatic people in the port footage was an Asian-looking woman, standing behind a wooden barrier, in striped camp uniform. Her expression is very serious, unlike many others who were obviously delighted to be liberated and arrive in Sweden. As I edited my first two documentaries, we kept coming back to the footage showing this fascinating woman. What was she thinking right then? What happened to her after the war?” Magnus Gertten
